Traditional high-dimensional molecular profiling in biology hits the same wall: to measure a cell, you have to kill it, so you never see what it would have become. In genome engineering, conventional delivery methods perturb the cell beyond the intended genetic edit, affecting viability, fitness, or cellular state.


FluidFM addresses both challenges by touching a single living cell with nanoscale precision, keeping it alive whether we are reading its biology or rewriting its genome.

Applied to single-cell analysis, this enables Live-seq. We read a cell’s molecular state, apply a perturbation, and read the exact same living cell again. Direct cause and effect, not inferred correlation.

Applied to engineering, the same precision powers CellEDIT’s Impossible Genetic Edits. We deliver CRISPR directly into the nucleus of individual cells with maximum control while preserving the cell’s native state, enabling access to hard-to-transfect cells and large knock-ins beyond the reach of conventional methods.

From ETH Zurich to Same-Cell Biology


Founded in 2009 at ETH Zurich, Cytosurge began with the idea of combining atomic force microscopy, nanotechnology, and microfluidics to interact with living cells with exceptional precision. That work led to the development of FluidFM, a technology for precise manipulation, sampling, and delivery in living cells while preserving cell viability. That foundation now supports instruments and services for longitudinal, same-cell measurement in living cells.
