Your OMNIUM questions, answered

Find answers to common questions about the FluidFM OMNIUM platform, from lab requirements to application-specific details.

The FluidFM OMNIUM is a standalone, automated single-cell manipulation system combining atomic force microscopy with microfluidics. It enables gentle extraction and injection at the single-cell level using force-controlled FluidFM probes with apertures as small as 600nm, maintaining 85-89% cell viability.

The FluidFM OMNIUM supports five core application modes. Nano-injection delivers any cargo — plasmids, CRISPR reagents, nanoparticles, viruses — into individual cells with cytoplasm or nucleus selectivity. Sampling collects subcellular biopsies for Live-seq, metabolomics, and proteomics.

Pick and Place selects and isolates living cells for monoclonal lines, neuron networks, and organoid sorting. Adhesion quantifies cell-substrate and cell-cell adhesion forces for mechanobiology. Bioprinting enables bio-patterning and axon guidance from image or file.

Three standard probes are available. The FluidFM Nanosyringe (600 nm pyramidal side aperture) handles nano-injection and cytoplasmic or nuclear extraction. The FluidFM Micropipette (2, 4, or 8 μm flat circular aperture) is designed for cell isolation, pick-and-place, and adhesion measurements.

The FluidFM Nanopipette (300 nm aperture) is used for spotting, nanoprinting, and sub-micron particle manipulation. A Prototyping Probe with a closed or custom aperture is also available. All probes ship with a QR code linking to specifications and a unique SEM image.

The system requires a dedicated footprint of 1.5 m × 1.5 m, with a total recommended lab space of 4 m² (43 sq ft) to allow cleaning and maintenance access. Total system weight is up to 500 kg.

Power requirements are 13 plugs on the same ground (600 W average, 2500 W peak). A fast, stable Ethernet connection is required for setup and remote support. The lab must maintain 18–37 °C, 20–65% relative humidity, and 950–1100 hPa atmospheric pressure. Installation will not proceed if requirements are not met in advance.

The platform is validated for 2D cultures of adherent mammalian cells for biopsy applications. For cell isolation, both adherent cells (via local trypsinization) and suspension cells (via suction at −100 mbar) are supported.

Compatible formats include 6, 12, and 24 well plates; 50 mm WillCo and Mattek dishes; and microscopy slides 0.5–1.5 mm thick. Custom formats can be configured using the ARYA Plate Editor.

Standard purchase includes free software updates for 12 months and complimentary EDNA data management software. Cytosurge also offers the 360 Support Package, which adds care-free service agreements, multi-year warranty extension, trimestral ARYA software releases, and premium support ranging from training to experiment design and result evaluation. Both on-site and remote experimental support are available post-installation

OMNIUM is semi-automated: you select the target cell under the microscope, and the system's force feedback handles the approach, penetration, and retraction automatically. Once a plate is queued in ARYA, runs proceed across many cells without re-calibration between them.

Download the full specifications above, or book a demo and our applications team will walk through OMNIUM on your own workflow.

Not every workflow requires bringing OMNIUM into your lab. Cytosurge also provides specialized services built on FluidFM technology.
