Part I: reviews featuring FluidFM
Ilaria Di Meglio

The year 2022 featured a total of 19 FluidFM publications and 3 reviews! FluidFM technology was employed for a broad range of applications, from measurement of single cell adhesion to collection of picoliter-scale biopsies from live cells for single-cell omics analysis.

Today, we’ve highlighted 2022 reviews on FluidFM so you can discover the versatility of FluidFM systems!

FluidFM for temporal single-cell transcriptomics analysis

Robert Horvath, a pioneer of FluidFM technology, highlights the recent groundbreaking Live-Seq method in Single-cell temporal transcriptomics from tiny cytoplasmic biopsies. The spotlight covers how Live-Seq transforms single-cell RNA sequencing into a temporal analysis platform using FluidFM technology and explains how the FluidFM OMNIUM system upgrades Live-seq for semi-automated collection of picoliter-scale single-cell biopsies!

FluidFM Adhesion Measurement of Preosteoblasts - Research Summary By Cytosurge

Schematic comparing traditional scRNA-seq (top) and Live-Seq (bottom). Traditional scRNA-seq requires cell lysis, which damages the target cell and makes further (temporal) investigation of the same cell impossible. Instead, Live-Seq enables mRNA collection by FluidFM extraction of single-cell sub-cellular content (the single-cell biopsy), allowing the target cell to remain viable such that its life cycle can be followed further with mRNA analysis. FluidFM for single-cell adhesion measurements

The article Extending applications of AFM to fluidic AFM in single living cell studies reviews both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FluidFM for single cell and extracellular vesicle (EV) studies. The authors highlight the advantages of using FluidFM, particularly the improved speed and versatility of this technology. Key applications are also discussed, including extracellular vesicle absorption, manipulation of a single living cell by intracellular injection, sampling of cellular fluid from a single living cell, patch clamping, and mass measurements of a single living cell.

FluidFM for mitochondria research

The commentary Mitochondria transplantation/transfer between single cells highlights the use of FluidFM as a single-cell technology for extraction, injection and transplantation of mitochondria. The commentary underlines the existing limitations of organelle manipulation and focuses on how the FluidFM-based approach, established by the Vorholt group at ETH Zurich, may overcome these. The authors discuss how FluidFM may open doors for efficient mitochondrial replacement therapy required to treat pathological conditions like stroke.
